Gaganyaan Mission – Delay in India’s First Human Spaceflight Initiative
Introduction
The 20th century was a major turning point in the history of global space exploration.
From Robert Goddard’s rocket experiments to Yuri Gagarin’s human spaceflight,
and the Apollo–11 Moon landing, humanity reached outer space.
In this sequence, India is also attempting to create history through its human spaceflight mission
“Gaganyaan”. However, the project has been delayed due to
technical and safety reasons.
1️⃣ Historical Background
1926 – Robert Goddard launched the first liquid-fuel rocket
1957 – Sputnik–1 (First artificial satellite)
1961 – Yuri Gagarin (First human in space)
1969 – Apollo–11 Moon mission
India:
1963 – First sounding rocket (Thumba)
1984 – Rakesh Sharma (Spaceflight via Soyuz T-11)

2️⃣ Evolution of the Gaganyaan Mission
2007 – Proposal by then ISRO Chairman Madhavan Nair
2009 – Approval by the Central Government
August 15, 2018 – Official announcement by the Prime Minister
Project Cost: ₹12,400 crore
Objectives:
• 3 Indian astronauts
• 400 km Low Earth Orbit
• Stay in space for 3 days
• Safe return to Earth

3️⃣ Why the Delay?
Initially planned for 2021, it has now been shifted to 2027.
Main reasons:
• Crew Escape System safety tests
• Necessity of multiple stages of unmanned tests
• COVID-19 impact
• Development of Life Support Systems
Since human spaceflight involves high risk,
three unmanned test missions are being conducted.
4️⃣ “Vyommitra” – AI Robot
In the first unmanned test, a humanoid robot named “Vyommitra” is being used.
Features:
• AI-based functioning
• Monitoring of pressure and temperature
• Analysis of human biological changes
• Communication with the command center

5️⃣ Selection of Astronauts
Four Indian Air Force officers have been selected.
They received training in Russia.
Training included space physiology and other human space biology modules.
6️⃣ Future Goal – Indian Space Station
After the success of Gaganyaan:
• At an altitude of 400 km
• Establishment of the “Bharatiya Antariksh Station”
• Operational by 2035
