USA–Israel Joint Attack & Iran Nuclear Program

Introduction

Alleging that Iran is enriching uranium required for nuclear weapon production, the United States and Israel have jointly carried out military strikes, creating serious tensions in West Asia. Non-Proliferation efforts and regional geopolitical power competition are the core factors behind this development.

1️⃣ Uranium Enrichment – Scientific Basis of Nuclear Weapons

In natural uranium, U-235 constitutes only about 0.7%. For electricity generation, 3–5% enrichment is sufficient. However, 90% or higher enrichment results in Weapons Grade Uranium. Therefore, the level of uranium enrichment becomes an international security concern.

2️⃣ International Law & Nuclear Non-Proliferation Mechanisms

NPT (Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty – 1968) → An agreement to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons; five nuclear weapon states are officially recognized. Iran is a signatory to the NPT.

IAEA (International Atomic Energy Agency) → Organization that monitors nuclear activities; Safeguards Agreements ensure security oversight.

JCPOA (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action – 2015) → A nuclear agreement between Iran and P5+1 countries; the U.S. withdrawal in 2018 weakened the agreement. As a result, military tensions have increased again.

3️⃣ Military Actions and Security Doctrines

U.S. Operation – Operation Epic Fury, Israel Operation – Roaring Lion, and earlier Operation Midnight Hammer reflect the Pre-emptive Strike Doctrine. The United States has deployed aircraft carriers and warships around Iran. Iran has issued warnings of retaliatory attacks. This situation relates to Proxy War Politics and the Balance of Power theory.

4️⃣ Domestic Political Dimension

Public protests against the government are ongoing in Iran. Government repression has resulted in thousands of casualties. The United States has expressed support for the protesters. This connects with Regime Change Politics and Human Rights Diplomacy.

5️⃣ Regional and Global Implications

West Asian Politics: The historical Israel–Iran rivalry and involvement of militant groups like Hezbollah and Hamas may escalate tensions.

Global Economy: Increase in oil prices, security threats to the Strait of Hormuz, and challenges to India’s energy security.

India’s Position: Strategic Autonomy and balanced foreign policy (Non-alignment 2.0).

Conclusion / Way Forward

The issue surrounding Iran’s nuclear program is a complex international challenge connecting nuclear non-proliferation, regional geopolitics, and global security. Instead of military confrontation, strengthening IAEA monitoring, a new nuclear agreement, and multilateral diplomacy remain the only sustainable solutions for long-term peace.
