Nationwide HPV (Human Papillomavirus) vaccination campaign launched

Introduction

With the objective of preventing Cervical Cancer, which is one of the most common cancers among women in India, a nationwide HPV vaccination campaign for 14-year-old girls has been launched. This is an important public health policy initiative that aims to strengthen women’s welfare, public health, and human resource development.

1️⃣ What is HPV?

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a virus transmitted through sexual contact. Among its types, HPV 16 and 18 are the major causes of cervical cancer. HPV 6 and 11 commonly cause genital warts. In India, cervical cancer holds a significant place among cancer-related deaths in women. According to WHO reports, vaccination can prevent most HPV-related cancers.

2️⃣ Gardasil-4 Vaccine

Gardasil-4 is an HPV vaccine administered on a single-dose basis. It provides protection against four types — HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18. When administered between the ages of 9–14 years, it offers maximum protection. Efforts are being made to include this vaccine in the Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP).

3️⃣ Administrative and Health Infrastructure

This vaccine will be provided at the following government health facilities:
Primary Health Centres (PHC)
Community Health Centres (CHC)
Sub-district & District Government Hospitals
Government Medical College Hospitals

This reflects the strength of India’s three-tier health care system (Primary – Secondary – Tertiary Health Care System).

4️⃣ Constitutional & Policy Linkages

Article 21 – Right to Life → Includes the right to a healthy life. Directive Principles (Article 47) → It is the duty of the State to improve public health. National Health Policy 2017 → Emphasizes preventive healthcare. Sustainable Development Goal (SDG 3) → Good Health and Well-being.

5️⃣ Social Significance

Women’s education + Health = Human capital development. Vaccination at an early age helps in reducing future healthcare expenditure. This also leads to a reduction in female mortality rate. Furthermore, it strengthens the concept of Preventive Healthcare.

Conclusion / Way Forward

The HPV vaccination campaign is not just a medical initiative; it forms the foundation for women’s bodily autonomy, health equity, and long-term social progress. For the complete success of this programme, awareness campaigns, parental cooperation, and school-based implementation strategies must be strengthened.
