Kalaichemmal Award – An Honor by the Government of Tamil Nadu for Artists

Introduction

Tamil Nadu is known as the home of diverse artistic traditions. Arts such as painting, sculpture, music, and dance reflect the cultural identity of the state. To encourage and recognize such artists, the Government of Tamil Nadu presents the “Kalaichemmal Award” every year.

1. Purpose of the Kalaichemmal Award

This award, presented by the Department of Art and Culture of the Tamil Nadu Government, aims to preserve traditional arts, encourage the growth of modern art, and honour outstanding artists.

2. Award Details

Artists who receive the Kalaichemmal Award are given a copper plaque, certificate of appreciation, and cash prize of ₹1 lakh.

3. Awardees for the Year 2026

At a ceremony held at the Secretariat in Chennai, Minister for Tamil Development and Information, M. P. Saminathan presented the awards. The awardees are: Traditional Painting – Ma. Balasubramanian; Traditional Sculpture – The. Sreekanda Sthapathi, U. Padmanaban; Modern Style Painting – Dr. Ko. Vilvanathan, Muraja; Modern Style Sculpture – S. Shanthi.

4. Participants in the Event

The event was attended by K. Manivasan, Secretary of the Tourism, Culture and Religious Endowments Department, S. Valarmathi, Director of the Department of Art and Culture, and Joint Director J. Karkuzhali.
