Air Pollution – Causes and Solutions.

Introduction

Air Pollution has become a major global environmental problem. Especially in South Asia, rapid urbanization, industrialization, and the increase in the number of vehicles have significantly increased air pollution. In highly populated countries like India and China, this problem has become very severe.

1. Status of Air Pollution

According to studies by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank, many major cities in South Asia are severely affected by air pollution. Studies indicate that around 1.2 million people die every year in India due to air pollution. Furthermore, India’s capital city Delhi is considered one of the most polluted cities in the world.

2. Major Causes of Air Pollution

(a) Vehicles: Emissions from petrol and diesel vehicles such as carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen oxides affect the quality of air.

(b) Industries and Power Plants: Nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides, and organic chemical substances released into the air cause pollution.

(c) Burning of Solid Waste: Burning garbage, plastic, and rubber in open spaces increases air pollution.

(d) Burning of Agricultural Crop Residue: In states such as Punjab and Haryana, burning crop residues increases the formation of smog.

(e) Climatic Factors: During winter seasons, higher humidity causes smoke to remain in the air, leading to the formation of smog.

3. Impacts of Air Pollution

Air pollution causes severe health impacts on humans. Major health issues include respiratory disorders, asthma, lung cancer, heart diseases, stroke, and eye and skin problems. These have become a major challenge for public health.

4. Measures to Control Air Pollution

The Delhi Government has introduced several strategies to control air pollution. These include scientific management of solid waste and dust, regulations on polluting industries, rules to reduce vehicle emissions, increasing tree plantation in cities, and promoting electric vehicles. Additionally, instead of burning crop residues, efforts are being made to destroy them using a liquid developed by the PUSA Institute.

Conclusion / Way Forward

For a major environmental issue like air pollution, blaming a single factor will not provide a solution. Instead, a coordinated policy involving the government, industries, farmers, and the public is required. Strengthening initiatives such as afforestation, use of clean energy, electric vehicles, and waste management is essential to reduce air pollution effectively.
