Tamil Nadu Housing Schemes – Key Information
Introduction
Housing is one of the basic necessities of human life. Providing safe and stable housing for poor and middle-class people is an important responsibility of the government. In this regard, the Government of Tamil Nadu has been implementing several housing schemes. These schemes play a major role in improving the living standards of both rural and urban populations.
1. Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme
The Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Scheme was launched by the Tamil Nadu Government to support the construction of houses for the rural poor. Under this scheme, permission has been given to build a total of 2 lakh houses. So far, 1.79 lakh houses have been constructed, and approval has been given for the construction of another 1 lakh houses. After the 2016–2021 period, 1,79,850 houses are planned to be built during 2021–2026.
2. Multi-Storey Housing Scheme
The Multi-Storey Housing Scheme aims to provide residential facilities for the urban poor. Under this scheme, 58,211 houses have been completed at a cost of ₹8,384 crore. In addition, 53,467 houses are currently under construction. During 2016–21, 27,688 houses were built, and 58,211 houses are planned during 2021–26.
3. Self-Construction Housing Scheme
This scheme is implemented through the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board, under which financial assistance is provided for people to build their own houses. Under this scheme, 2.63 lakh houses have been completed at a cost of ₹3,058 crore. During 2016–21, 1,40,250 houses were built, and 2,63,941 houses have been constructed during 2021–26.
4. House Site Patta Distribution
To provide land ownership to people who do not have houses, the Tamil Nadu Government is implementing the House Site Patta Distribution Scheme. In the last five years, house site pattas have been distributed to 23.56 lakh people.
5. SimpleGo – Simplified Building Approval
To simplify the process of obtaining building permission, an online system called SimpleGo has been introduced. It operates through a single-window online system. So far, approval has been granted for 24,446 layout applications and 9,002 building applications.
6. Self-Certification Scheme
Under this scheme, buildings up to 3,500 square feet can obtain approval through a self-certification process. More than 1.7 lakh people have benefited from this scheme so far.
7. Permanent Housing for Sri Lankan Tamils
Under the scheme to provide permanent houses for Sri Lankan Tamils, 10,045 houses are planned to be constructed. For this purpose, ₹589 crore has been allocated. So far, 7,469 houses have been completed.
8. Tholkudi Scheme
The Tholkudi Scheme has been introduced to improve housing facilities for tribal communities. Under this scheme, 7,674 houses for tribal people have been constructed at a cost of ₹221 crore.
9. Rural Housing Renovation
This scheme aims to renovate old and damaged rural houses. Under this initiative, 1,14,470 houses have been renovated at a cost of ₹975 crore.
