Megamaser: Cosmic Light Show (Hydroxyl Megamaser கண்டுபிடிப்பு)
Introduction
In space research, natural phenomena called “MASER (Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation)” are very important. Recently, astronomers discovered a distant Hydroxyl Megamaser. It is called a “Megamaser” because it appears with millions of times more brightness than normal masers. Such discoveries help scientists understand the formation and evolution of galaxies.
1. What is a Maser?
MASER stands for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation. It works similarly to a LASER, but it emits microwave or radio waves. In space, certain gases move to a high energy state and when they release that energy, they produce highly amplified radio waves. This phenomenon is known as Maser Emission.
2. Hydroxyl Molecule and its Role
Hydroxyl (OH) is a molecule made up of one oxygen (O) atom and one hydrogen (H) atom. It is commonly found in large gas clouds in space. When two galaxies collide or when intense star formation occurs, these OH molecules move into a high energy state and produce maser emission.
3. What is a Megamaser?
Masers that are millions of times brighter than normal masers are called
Megamasers.
They usually form in the following environments:
• Galaxy Collisions
• Starburst Galaxies (galaxies with intense star formation)
• Regions near Supermassive Black Holes
These can be detected from very large distances using radio waves.
4. Recent Discovery
A Hydroxyl Megamaser has been discovered using the MeerKAT Telescope. It is located in the galaxy IRAS 16399-0937. This galaxy is about 370 million light-years away from Earth. Because of its extreme brightness, it is sometimes referred to as a “Gigamaser”.
5. Scientific Importance
Megamasers provide astronomers with important information:
• Understanding galaxy evolution
• Studying galaxy collisions and star formation
• Measuring gas movement around black holes
• Estimating the speed and distance of galaxies
