Infrastructure Projects Worth ₹5,655 Crore Launched in Tamil Nadu by the Prime Minister

Introduction

Infrastructure development plays an important role in India’s economic growth. Sectors such as roads, railways, energy, and rural connectivity serve as the foundation for the country’s sustainable development. In this context, various infrastructure projects worth around ₹5,655 crore in Tamil Nadu have been launched and foundation stones laid.

1. Major Projects Inaugurated

1(a). Chennai Manali – Indian Oil Lube Blending Plant

This plant has been established by Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL).

• One of the world’s second-largest integrated lubricant manufacturing complexes
• Enhances India’s oil and petroleum production capacity

1(b). Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY)

Under this scheme:

• 370.52 kilometers of rural roads are being constructed across Tamil Nadu
• A major initiative to improve rural connectivity

2. Projects for which Foundation Stones were Laid

2(a). City Gas Distribution (CGD) Project

This project is being implemented in the Nilgiris and Erode districts.

• Implemented by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL)
• Will increase the use of PNG (Piped Natural Gas) and CNG

2(b). National Highway Development

A project has been launched to construct a bypass road on NH-81 from Gangaikonda Cholapuram to Meensurutti.

This will:
• Reduce traffic congestion
• Enable faster and safer travel

3. Newly Launched Train Services

A total of 5 new train services were launched:

• Nagercoil – Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express
• Podanur (Coimbatore) – Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express
• Rameswaram – Mangaluru Junction Express
• Tirunelveli – Mangaluru Junction Express
• Mayiladuthurai – Tiruvarur – Karaikudi Rail Service

These train services will improve connectivity between Tamil Nadu and other states.

4. Key Benefits of the Projects

4(a). Clean Energy

Through the use of PNG and CNG, about 3 million people will receive safe and clean energy.

4(b). Environmental Protection

Carbon dioxide emissions will be reduced by about 24%, thereby improving environmental protection.

4(c). Employment Generation

These projects are expected to generate around 22 lakh man-days of employment.

4(d). Rural Connectivity

Through roads and bridges, the economic development and connectivity of villages will improve.

4(e). Social Progress

Through these projects:

• Students will be able to travel to school more easily
• Safer travel for women will be ensured
• Transportation costs for farmers will decrease
