Solid Waste Management – The Biggest Challenge of Urbanization.

Introduction

With the rapid increase in urbanization, Solid Waste Management has become a major challenge for Indian cities. Due to unplanned urban expansion, many garbage dumping yards that were once located in the outskirts of cities have now become part of the central urban areas. As a result, environmental pollution, health problems, and social opposition have increased significantly.

1. Urban Growth and Waste Management Problem

As population and consumption increase in cities, a large amount of waste is generated daily. Earlier, waste was dumped in areas where people did not live; however, with the expansion of cities, those places have now turned into residential areas. As a result, people living near dumping yards face foul smell, air pollution, and respiratory diseases, leading to serious health concerns.

2. Coimbatore Vellalore Dump Yard – A Case Study

The Vellalore dump yard of the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation has been functioning for the past 20 years. The site covers an area of about 650 acres. Around 1200 tons of waste are dumped daily at this location. Frequent garbage fires cause severe air pollution in nearby areas. To address this issue, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in 2018 ordered that the waste should be removed using the Bio-mining method and the dump yard should be relocated. However, the order has not been fully implemented.

3. Situation in Tiruppur and Other Cities

In Tiruppur, waste has been dumped in rock pits for nearly 40 years. Public protests and court cases show the seriousness of this issue. At the national level, massive garbage mountains have formed in places such as Ghazipur, Okhla, and Bhalswa (Delhi). This highlights the lack of proper planning in solid waste management in Indian cities.

4. Important Direction of the Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of India has issued important guidelines regarding solid waste management. According to the directions, waste should be segregated into four categories:

Biodegradable waste – food and vegetable waste
Non-biodegradable waste – plastic and synthetic materials
Biomedical waste – syringes, gloves, medicines
Hazardous waste – batteries and electronic devices

In addition, mayors and councillors must monitor waste segregation. Violations of the rules may lead to fines and imprisonment.

5. Role of the Public

Solid waste management cannot be handled by the government alone. Public participation is extremely important. People should segregate waste at the household level, reduce plastic usage, and avoid dumping garbage in public places. It has also been emphasized that solid waste management awareness should be included in school curricula.

Conclusion / Way Forward

With the rapid increase in urbanization, solid waste management has become a major environmental challenge in India. Government schemes, court orders, and technological solutions alone are not sufficient; public cooperation is also essential. By prioritizing research that converts waste into resources through the “Waste to Wealth” approach, it is possible to ensure sustainable environmental protection.
