Resolution Condemning Iran in the UN Security Council
Introduction
Maintaining international peace and security is one of the primary objectives of the United Nations. The UN Security Council (UNSC) plays a crucial role in addressing global conflicts and security threats. Recently, a resolution was passed in the Security Council condemning the drone and missile attacks allegedly carried out by Iran on Gulf countries, and it strongly urged that such attacks must be stopped immediately.
1. Background of the Issue
The Middle East region has long been an area of political and security tensions. In particular, the United States and Israel have accused Iran of developing nuclear weapons and long-range missiles.
In this context, it is said that the US–Israel alliance has taken actions against Iran. As a response, Iran is alleged to have carried out drone and missile attacks on US bases and allied countries in the Gulf region.
2. UN Security Council Resolution
To condemn these attacks, Bahrain introduced a resolution in the UN Security Council.
Main points of the resolution:
It emphasized full support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of
Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan.
The attacks allegedly carried out by Iran were described as violations of international law and as a threat to global peace and security.
Furthermore:
Attacks on Gulf countries must be stopped immediately
Indirect attacks through terrorist groups must not be carried out
Threats against neighboring countries must be stopped.
3. Support for the Resolution
13 countries voted in favor of the resolution. No country voted against it. However, Russia and China (permanent members with veto power) did not participate in the voting.
Structure of the UN Security Council:
5 Permanent Members:
United States
Russia
China
France
United Kingdom
In addition, there are 10 non-permanent members who are elected for a two-year term.
The resolution was proposed by 135 countries including India.
4. Iran’s Response
Iran’s Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, strongly criticized the resolution.
According to him:
The resolution is unfair and against international law.
Iran, which has committed no wrongdoing, is being targeted for political reasons.
He also stated that this could become a dangerous precedent for other sovereign nations.
Conclusion / Way Forward
The political tensions in the Middle East can significantly affect global peace and the world economy. In particular, the Strait of Hormuz plays a crucial role in global oil trade.
Therefore, such conflicts should be resolved not through military actions but through diplomatic negotiations and international cooperation.
