Central Government Schemes for the Development of Youth in Tamil Nadu

Introduction

Youth are considered the largest human resource in India. Their skill development, employment generation, and entrepreneurial growth form a strong foundation for the country’s economic development. With this objective, the Central Government has introduced and implemented several schemes. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, these schemes have created new opportunities for youth and contributed to socio-economic development.

1. Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana (PMKVY)

PMKVY is a major Central Government scheme that provides vocational skill training to youth. This program is associated with the Skill India Mission (2015).

Around 9 lakh youth in Tamil Nadu have received skill training. Under PMKVY 4.0, more than 480 Pradhan Mantri Skill Development Centres are functioning.

These centres provide technical and professional skills, making youth employable. This initiative also helps reduce the skill gap in the Indian economy.

2. UDYAM Registration – MSME Development

UDYAM Portal is an online platform for registering MSME (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises).

More than 61 lakh MSME enterprises in Tamil Nadu have been registered on this platform. It helps small and micro businesses access government financial assistance, credit facilities, and incentives.

Since the MSME sector plays a major role in employment generation in India, this platform encourages entrepreneurship.

3. Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP)

Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP) is a credit-linked subsidy scheme aimed at creating small businesses.

More than 43,000 new enterprises have been established in Tamil Nadu under this scheme. This has resulted in the creation of lakhs of employment opportunities.

This scheme is implemented through the KVIC (Khadi and Village Industries Commission).

4. Startup India and DPIIT Recognition

Through the DPIIT (Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade), innovative companies are recognized under the Startup India initiative.

More than 14,000 startup companies in Tamil Nadu have been registered. This initiative promotes innovation, entrepreneurship, and investment.

As a result, the digital economy and innovation ecosystem are further strengthened.

5. Women-Led Startup Enterprises

More than 7,000 women-led startup companies are functioning in Tamil Nadu.

This reflects the growth of women entrepreneurship and improves the economic independence of women.

This progress also supports the goal of Gender Equality and aligns with SDG-5 (Gender Equality).

6. Medical Education and Healthcare Infrastructure

The Central Government has taken several steps to strengthen healthcare infrastructure.

AIIMS has been established in Madurai. In addition, 11 new medical colleges have been started in Tamil Nadu.

As a result:
Medical seats have increased
The number of doctors will increase
Healthcare services will improve

This initiative is aligned with the objectives of the National Health Policy.

7. Industrial Training Institutions

More than 450 Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) and skill institutions are functioning in Tamil Nadu.

These institutions provide vocational education and skill training and prepare youth according to industry requirements.

This supports major initiatives such as Skill India Mission and Make in India.
