Representation for Women in Policy Decision-Making in Agriculture and Food Sectors – President Droupadi Murmu
Introduction
The agriculture sector plays a vital role in the Indian economy. Especially in rural areas, women contribute significantly in agriculture, livestock management, and food production. However, women's participation in policy making and decision-making positions remains limited. To address this issue, President Droupadi Murmu emphasized that women must be given representation in policy decision-making in the agriculture and food sectors.
1. Role of Women in the Agriculture Sector
In India, a large number of rural women are engaged in agriculture and food production related activities. Women play an important role in various tasks such as sowing, harvesting, livestock management, and food processing. However, their representation is still low in key areas such as policy formulation, administrative decisions, and planning. Therefore, it has been emphasized that women should be given proper participation in policy making.
2. Need to Highlight Women's Contributions
To showcase the contributions made by women in agriculture, articles, research studies, and publications should be widely released. This will help create awareness in society about the role of women in agriculture. It will also encourage the next generation to participate in the agriculture sector.
3. Technological Advancement and Women
In the field of livestock health management, efforts are being made to use Artificial Intelligence (AI). Through an initiative called “Sarlaben”, technology is being used to assist farmers. This enables women to utilize modern technologies and helps in improving agricultural productivity.
4. Government Schemes Supporting Women
(a) Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) – A total of 57 crore bank accounts have been opened. Among them, 56% of the accounts belong to women. This has significantly improved women’s financial inclusion.
(b) Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana (DAY-NRLM) – Through Women Self-Help Groups (SHGs), the livelihoods of rural women are being strengthened. Around 90 lakh women self-help groups have benefited from this initiative.
(c) Namo Drone Didi Scheme – The main objective of this scheme is to provide drones to women self-help groups. Using drone technology, modern agricultural practices such as fertilizer spraying and pesticide spraying are being introduced.
(d) National Rural Livelihood Mission – The goal of this scheme is to create 6 crore “Lakhpati Women”. Already, 3 crore women have achieved this milestone.
5. International Significance
The United Nations (UN) has declared the year 2026 as the “International Year of Women Farmers”. The objective is to recognize the contribution of women farmers globally and ensure their economic empowerment.
Conclusion / Way Forward
Women play a crucial role in the agriculture sector. However, greater opportunities must be provided to them in policy and administrative positions. Strengthening women through technology, financial support, and government schemes is essential for rural economic development and social equality.
