6,800 Start-up Companies Shut Down in India Over the Last 5 Years.
Introduction
Start-up companies are enterprises that emerge based on new technology, innovation, and entrepreneurial skills. India is one of the countries with a rapidly growing start-up ecosystem in the world. However, due to market changes, investment challenges, and weaknesses in business models, thousands of start-up companies have shut down in the last five years.
1. Growth of Start-ups in India
Startup India Initiative – 2016 was launched to promote entrepreneurship, innovation and technological development, and job creation. As of 31 January 2024, 2,12,283 start-up companies have been officially recognized in India. Out of these, 6,789 companies (around 3.2%) have shut down.

Information Technology Services (IT Services) – 875 companies have shut down.
The main reasons include intense competition and cost-cutting pressures.
HealthTech sector – 553 companies have shut down.
The reasons include reduced investment and changes in the market.
EdTech sector – 491 companies have shut down.
Although there was rapid growth during the COVID-19 pandemic,
demand declined after schools reopened.
3. Other Affected Sectors
Sectors such as Food & Beverages, AgriTech, and Retail Startups have also been affected. In addition, AI and FinTech sectors have also experienced the decline of some start-ups.
4. Reasons for Start-up Closures
The major reasons for the closure of start-ups include:
Unsustainable business models,
Funding crunch,
Global economic slowdown,
Changes in market demand,
Intense competition.
5. Government Initiatives
Through the Startup India Scheme (2016), the government provides tax incentives, financial support, and encouragement for technological innovation. Additionally, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) monitors acquisitions of start-ups by large companies. This helps ensure a healthy competitive environment.
