A new thermal power plant worth ₹13,077 crore in Udangudi

Introduction

Electricity is a crucial basic infrastructure for economic growth and industrial development in India. Especially in industrially advanced states like Tamil Nadu, the demand for electricity continues to increase. Considering this need, a new thermal power plant worth ₹13,077 crore has been established at Udangudi in Thoothukudi district. The power generation of this plant has been inaugurated by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin.

1. Key Features of the Project

This project has been implemented by the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO). The total investment of the project is ₹13,077 crore. Its power generation capacity is 2 × 660 MW = 1320 MW. It is a modern thermal power plant that uses Supercritical Thermal Technology.

2. Importance of Supercritical Technology

Supercritical technology operates at very high temperature and pressure for electricity generation. It has 5–6% higher efficiency compared to conventional thermal power plants. This results in lower fuel consumption and reduced environmental impact.

3. Coal Transportation System

The coal required for the power plant is transported through a coastal port. About 2000 tonnes of coal per hour will be directly supplied to the power plant. This system reduces transportation costs and ensures continuous power generation.

4. Environmental Protection Measures

For producing one unit of electricity, only 0.50–0.55 kg of coal is required. As a result, CO₂ emissions are reduced by about 25–30%. Additionally, a tree plantation initiative of 1.5 lakh trees has been implemented in the project area. So far, 52,000 trees have been planted.

5. Water Usage – Seawater Desalination

The water requirements of the power plant are fulfilled through a Desalination Plant. Through this process, seawater is purified and used. Therefore, groundwater and water from the Thamirabarani River are not utilized, which helps in conserving natural water resources.

6. Impact on Tamil Nadu’s Power Sector

This project will increase the total power generation capacity of the state. It will also reduce the need to purchase electricity from external markets. As a result, the financial position of TANGEDCO will improve. Moreover, it will support industrial growth and economic development.
