Empowerment of Women in Tamil Nadu – The Impact of Central Government Welfare Schemes

Introduction

Providing equal rights and opportunities to women in social, economic, and political spheres is known as “Women Empowerment.” It is considered one of the fundamental objectives of the Indian Constitution. In recent years, several Central Government welfare schemes have been implemented in Tamil Nadu to improve the quality of life of women. Particularly in sectors such as drinking water, housing, healthcare, employment opportunities, and savings schemes, these initiatives strengthen the empowerment of women.

1. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)

Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana was launched in 2017. The main objective of this scheme is to provide nutritional and health support to pregnant and lactating mothers. In Tamil Nadu, more than 1.9 million women have received financial assistance exceeding ₹1000 crore. This scheme plays a crucial role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates and improving the health of women.

2. Jal Jeevan Mission – Household Tap Water Connections

Jal Jeevan Mission was launched in 2019. The primary objective of this scheme is to provide safe drinking water to every household. In Tamil Nadu, more than 11 million household tap water connections have been provided. As a result, the time spent by women in collecting water has significantly reduced, allowing them to participate more actively in education and employment opportunities.

3. Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana was launched in 2016. Under this scheme, free LPG connections are provided to women from poor households. In Tamil Nadu, more than 4.1 million LPG connections have been distributed. This initiative reduces indoor air pollution caused by traditional fuels and protects the health of women.

4. Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Housing Scheme)

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana aims to provide safe housing for all. In Tamil Nadu, more than 1.4 million houses have been constructed. Additionally, 65 lakh individual household toilets have been built under the Swachh Bharat Mission. These initiatives ensure dignity, safety, and better sanitation for women.

5. Women-led MSME Development

Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are a vital sector of the Indian economy. In Tamil Nadu, more than 2.3 million MSME enterprises are led by women. This significantly contributes to the growth of women’s entrepreneurship and their economic independence.

6. Lakhpati Didi Initiative

The Lakhpati Didi initiative encourages women in Self Help Groups to earn an annual income of ₹1 lakh. In Tamil Nadu, around 5.6 lakh women have achieved financial independence. This initiative also plays an important role in strengthening the rural economy.

7. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana

Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana was introduced in 2015. It is a savings scheme aimed at supporting the education and marriage of girl children. In Tamil Nadu, more than 4 million girl children have been enrolled in this scheme. Through this initiative, savings exceeding ₹33,000 crore have been generated. This scheme ensures financial security for the future of girl children.

8. Women Self Help Groups (SHGs)

In Tamil Nadu, the Self Help Group movement among women is very strong. More than 3.3 lakh SHGs are actively functioning. Through these groups, women gain access to savings, credit, employment opportunities, and social advancement. This greatly strengthens the economic empowerment of rural women.

Static Link (Polity & Governance)

Article 14 of the Indian Constitution – Right to Equality.
Article 15(3) – Special provisions for women and children.
Directive Principles (Articles 39 and 42) – Welfare of women and maternity protection.
Furthermore, women empowerment is identified as an important objective of the government and is also included in the TNPSC syllabus.

Conclusion / Way Forward

Women empowerment cannot be achieved through welfare schemes alone. It requires integrated development in education, employment, social security, and economic independence. The combined efforts of the Central and State Governments through these schemes not only improve the quality of life of women in Tamil Nadu but also contribute to sustainable socio-economic development.
