Central Government Schemes for the Welfare of Farmers in Tamil Nadu

Introduction

Agriculture is considered the backbone of India’s economy. Especially in Tamil Nadu, the Central Government has implemented various schemes to protect the livelihood of farmers and fishermen and to increase agricultural production. Efforts have been undertaken in several sectors such as income support, insurance, infrastructure development, and micro-irrigation.

1. Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN)

Through the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-KISAN) scheme, direct income support is provided to farmers. In Tamil Nadu, more than ₹12,700 crore has been provided and 47 lakh farmers have benefited from this scheme. This scheme operates through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system. ₹6,000 per year is deposited in three installments directly into the farmers’ bank accounts.

2. Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana

Through the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), the fisheries sector is being developed. More than ₹1,400 crore has been allocated in Tamil Nadu. The key objectives of this scheme are increasing fishermen’s income, promoting fisheries production and exports, and improving fisheries infrastructure. This scheme promotes the vision of the “Blue Revolution”.

3. Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana

Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is an important crop insurance scheme that protects farmers from crop losses. Under this scheme, more than 3.8 crore insurance claims have been processed and over ₹15,000 crore has been provided as compensation. This scheme provides protection against losses caused by natural disasters such as floods, droughts, and other calamities.

4. Agriculture Infrastructure Fund

This scheme was launched to improve agricultural infrastructure. Nearly ₹6,000 crore has been allocated in Tamil Nadu. Through this fund, facilities such as warehouses, cold storage facilities, and market linkages are being developed. These initiatives help improve price stability and increase farmers’ income.

5. Soil Health Card Scheme

This scheme assesses the quality of soil in agricultural lands and guides farmers in using the right fertilizers. In Tamil Nadu, more than 1.5 crore Soil Health Cards have been issued. It helps in protecting soil health, optimizing fertilizer usage, and increasing crop yield.

6. Micro Irrigation Scheme

Under the principle of “Per Drop More Crop”, a scheme has been implemented to improve efficient water usage. In Tamil Nadu, around 13 lakh hectares of land have been brought under micro-irrigation. This includes methods such as drip irrigation and sprinkler irrigation. These methods ensure water conservation and increased agricultural productivity.

Conclusion / Way Forward

The Central Government has implemented several schemes to increase farmers’ income and protect their livelihood in Tamil Nadu. Income support, insurance coverage, infrastructure development, and modern irrigation methods are helping transform agriculture into a sustainable and growing sector. In the future, improving technology adoption, market access, and water management will further strengthen the growth of the agricultural sector.
