Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly Elections to be Held on April 23 – Announcement by the Election Commission of India.

Introduction

India is the largest democracy in the world. The most fundamental feature of a democratic system is free and fair elections. To conduct and supervise elections, the Election Commission of India has been established under Article 324 of the Indian Constitution.

The Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the Legislative Assembly elections to be held in the states of Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, and West Bengal, as well as in the Union Territory of Puducherry.

1. Election Schedule

According to the announcement made by the Election Commission of India, the elections in the states will be conducted as follows:

Single-phase election:
Tamil Nadu – April 23
Kerala – April 9
Assam – April 9
Puducherry – April 9

Two-phase election:
West Bengal – April 23 & April 29

Counting of votes:
For all the states, the vote counting will take place on May 4.

2. Tamil Nadu Election Schedule

Election Notification – March 30
Last Date for Filing Nominations – April 6
Scrutiny of Nominations – April 7
Last Date for Withdrawal of Nominations – April 9
Polling – April 23
Counting of Votes – May 4

3. Assembly Constituencies

In this election, polling will be conducted for a total of 824 Legislative Assembly constituencies.

Tamil Nadu – 234
Kerala – 140
West Bengal – 294
Assam – 126
Puducherry – 30

4. Number of Voters

A total of 17.40 crore voters are expected to participate in this election.

Tamil Nadu – 5.67 crore
Kerala – 2.70 crore
West Bengal – 6.44 crore
Assam – 2.50 crore
Puducherry – 9.44 lakh

5. Arrangements by the Election Commission

Various arrangements have been made to conduct the elections smoothly.

A total of 2.19 lakh polling stations have been set up.
25 lakh officials will be engaged in election duties.
Each polling station will have a maximum of 1200 voters.

Drinking water
Toilets
Disabled-friendly access (ramp)
Wheelchairs
Help desk

6. Model Code of Conduct

As soon as the election dates were announced, the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) came into immediate effect.

Important rules include:

Political parties must not misuse government resources
Buying votes through money or gifts is prohibited
Carrying cash above ₹50,000 requires proper documentation
