Loan Recovery Cases – Special ‘Lok Adalat’ Initiative

Introduction

Loan recovery cases (NPAs) pending in banks and financial institutions in India pose a major challenge to the economy. To resolve these pending cases quickly, alternative dispute resolution mechanisms are necessary. For this purpose, the Central Government has planned to introduce special ‘Lok Adalats’.

Body

In Debt Recovery Tribunals (DRT) and Debt Recovery Appellate Tribunals (DRAT), about 71% of the pending cases are high-value cases exceeding ₹100 crore. Such a large number of cases remaining pending for a long time affects the efficiency of the banking sector.

To address this, the Central Government has adopted a two-pronged strategy:

• Dedicated tribunals for high-value cases
• Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods – Lok Adalat

Lok Adalat (Static Link):
• Functions under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987
• Provides speedy resolution based on compromise
• Low cost and quick justice
• Decision is final (no appeal)

As part of this initiative, 4 special Lok Adalats are planned in 2026. This will help in faster resolution of loan recovery cases.

Economic Significance:
• Reduction in NPAs
• Increased lending capacity of banks
• Improvement in economic circulation
• Enhancement of Ease of Doing Business
