New Income Tax Act 2025
Introduction / Concept
Income Tax Law is the law through which the government imposes tax on the income earned by individuals and companies.
In India:
Old Law – Income Tax Act, 1961
New Law – Income Tax Act, 2025 (Effective from April 1, 2026)
This is a Tax Reform.

Why a new law?
1961 Act – More than 60 years old
Complex rules
Confusing calculations (Previous Year / Assessment Year)
Not suitable for the digital economy
Hence, there was a need for simplicity + clarity + modern economy alignment.

(1) Simplified Law
Easy for the public to understand
Reduced and simplified sections
(2) “Tax Year” Concept
Earlier: Previous Year + Assessment Year (confusing)
Now: Single Tax Year system
(3) Relief for Late Filing
Even after the deadline:
TDS refund can be claimed
Certain relaxations without penalty
(4) Transitional Arrangement
2025-26 → Old law
2026-27 → New law
(5) Increase in F&O (Derivatives Trading) Tax
Reason: High losses among small investors
Changes:
Futures Tax: 0.02% → 0.05%
Options Tax: Premium 0.1% → 0.15%
Exercise: 0.125% → 0.15%
Objective: To reduce speculation
(6) Reduction in TCS for Foreign Expenses
Foreign Travel / Education / Medical
TCS reduced to 2%

(7) Tax Exemption for Data Centres
For foreign companies: Tax holiday till 2047
Objective: To make India a Data Hub
(8) Benefits for IT Sector
Safe Harbour Limit: ₹300 crore → ₹2000 crore
