Blood Bank Operations: National-Level Monitoring Plan (e-RaktKosh)
Introduction
In India, blood banks in the healthcare sector play a very important role. In emergencies, surgeries, and accidents, the availability of blood is a key factor in saving lives.
In this context, the central government has mandated a digital platform called ‘e-RaktKosh’ to integrate and monitor the functioning of blood banks.
What is e-RaktKosh?
It is a national-level Blood Bank Management Information System (BBMIS) operating under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.
It connects all blood banks in the country on a single platform and helps monitor blood storage, distribution, and usage.
Key Features of the Scheme
All authorized blood banks must record:
Blood Units
Blood Components (Plasma, Platelets, RBC)
These details must be updated in real-time.
This ensures real-time data transparency.
State health authorities are responsible for monitoring.
Why is this Scheme Necessary?
To prevent wastage of blood
To ensure immediate availability during emergencies
To maintain quality and safety of blood
To prevent black market activities
To support implementation of National Blood Policy (2002)
