India’s Nuclear-Powered Submarine – INS Aridhaman Induction
Introduction
In India’s defense sector, “Nuclear Deterrence” holds a very important position. In this context, the induction of the indigenously developed nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine INS Aridhaman into the Navy has further strengthened India’s defense capabilities.
1. Background of the Project – ATV Project (Advanced Technology Vessel)
India’s nuclear submarine program is known as the “ATV Project”.
It is a joint initiative implemented by DRDO, BARC, and the Indian Navy.
The development has progressed as INS Arihant (2016) → INS Arighat (2024) → INS Aridhaman (2026).
2. What is SSBN?
SSBN = Ship Submersible Ballistic Nuclear
It is a nuclear-powered submarine capable of carrying nuclear missiles.
It has the ability to remain hidden underwater for long durations.
It provides a crucial “Second Strike Capability”.
3. Nuclear Triad
The three components of India’s nuclear deterrence policy are:
Land-based missiles
Air-based delivery systems (Aircraft)
Sea-based systems (Submarine-launched missiles)
With the induction of INS Aridhaman, the sea-based capability is strengthened, ensuring a complete Nuclear Triad.
4. Significance
Long-range strike capability (K-series missiles)
Stealth capability – operates undetected by enemies
Supports India’s “No First Use” policy through Second Strike capability
Success of Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives
5. Global Position
India joins countries like USA, Russia, China, France, and the United Kingdom.
This enhances India’s strategic strength.

Conclusion / Way Forward
Submarines like INS Aridhaman are major milestones in India’s defense architecture.
In the future, more advanced SSBN and SSN submarines should be developed.
At the same time, it is essential to maintain a responsible nuclear policy.
