Uniform Civil Code (UCC)
Meaning:
For all citizens in India
Irrespective of religion, caste, or community
A common civil law (marriage, divorce, inheritance rights, etc.)
Constitutional Basis:
Indian Constitution – Directive Principles of State Policy
Article 44
“The State shall endeavor to secure a Uniform Civil Code for all citizens”
Key Features:
Marriage, divorce, adoption, property rights, etc. brought under one common law
Currently, these vary based on religion (Hindu Law, Muslim Law, etc.)
Advantages:
Equality before law
Protection of women’s rights
National integration
Challenges:
Concern whether freedom of religion (Article 25) will be affected
Diverse cultural differences
One Nation – One Election
Meaning:
Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assembly elections
Conducted at the same time
Current Status:
In India, elections are held at different times
Main Objectives:
Reduce election expenditure
Reduce administrative burden
Ensure political stability
Advantages:
Reduction in election costs
Model Code of Conduct will not be enforced frequently
Continuity in governance
