Environment in Literature
Introduction
Environment is a fundamental component of human life.
It is classified into natural environment and artificial environment.
Since the ancient Tamils lived in harmony with nature, their literature reflects
environmental protection, sustainability, and respect for nature in a profound way.
Five Elements and Environmental Awareness
Tamil literature views the world as a combination of land, water, fire, air, and sky,
known as the five great elements.
Tolkappiyam: “Nilam Neer Thee Vali Visumbodu Aindhum Kalandha Mayakkam Ulagam”
This reflects the concept of ecological balance.
It is related to UPSC GS-III (Environment) and TNPSC General Science & Environment.
Water Management and Importance of Rain
Ancient Tamils deeply understood the importance of water.
“Without water, the world cannot exist”
They also explained the creative and destructive power of rain.
Water conservation methods:
Ponds, tanks, lakes, wells
Rainwater harvesting
These form the basis of modern water conservation policies.
Ecology and Lifestyle
Ancient Tamils classified land into:
Kurinji (mountain)
Mullai (forest)
Marutham (agricultural land)
Neithal (coastal region)
They developed lifestyles and agricultural practices suited to each region.
This is a precursor to the modern concept of sustainable development.
Importance of Trees and Forests
Trees play a vital role in the environment.
Regulate rainfall
Prevent soil erosion
Maintain oxygen balance
Trees like Banyan and Neem are noted in literature for their medical and environmental importance.
Biodiversity and Living Beings
Works like Kurunthogai and Kurinjipaatu describe various plants, animals, and birds.
This highlights the importance of biodiversity conservation.
Knowledge of Air and Noise Pollution
Tamils had knowledge about types of wind (breeze, dry wind, storm).
They also referred to noise pollution in literature.
This aligns with the basic concepts of modern environmental science.
Sustainability and Ethical Values
Mahatma Gandhi’s idea:
“Nature provides for needs, not for greed”
This aligns with Tamil literary principles such as:
Moderate usage
Nature-friendly lifestyle
Conclusion
Tamil literature provides pioneering ideas on environmental protection.
To address present issues like climate change, water scarcity, and pollution,
it is essential to revive and apply this traditional knowledge.
We must realize that “Protecting nature = Protecting humanity”.
