1. Nuclear Reactor
- Function: A device used to carry out the chain reaction of nuclear fission in a controlled manner.
- Control Rods: The element Cadmium is used to absorb neutrons and control the reaction.
- Moderators: Elements with low atomic mass and low neutron absorption cross-section are used to slow down neutrons.
- Tamil Nadu: The nuclear research centre located in Tamil Nadu is IGCAR (Kalpakkam).
2. Nuclear Reactions and Properties
- Nuclear Fusion: The fusion reaction of hydrogen and its isotopes produces the light and heat of the Sun.
- Radioactivity: External factors such as temperature or pressure do not affect radioactivity.
- Nuclear Model: In the collective model, the nucleus may have a non-spherical shape.
