State Reorganisation & Union Territories - PYQ Points
Objective Resolution: It was adopted by the Constituent Assembly on January 22, 1947. This resolution was later shaped into the Preamble of the Indian Constitution.
1. State Reorganisation Commissions
- Fazl Ali Commission (1953): Recommended the reorganisation of states on a linguistic basis. (Chairman: Fazl Ali).
- JVP Committee: Formed to examine the creation of states on a linguistic basis.
- Main Principle: "The foundation of our nationality is the Indian Union, but the states are the limbs of that Union" - State Reorganisation Commission.
- First Linguistic State: Andhra was the first state formed on a linguistic basis in India.
2. Timeline of State Formation
- 1956: Formation of Kerala.
- 1960: Bombay State was divided linguistically into Maharashtra and Gujarat.
- 1963: Formation of Nagaland.
- 1966: Formation of Haryana (Punjab was divided into Punjab and Haryana).
- 1968/69: Meghalaya became a separate state (Assam Reorganisation Act, 1969 granted it autonomous sub-state status).
- 1987 (February 20): Arunachal Pradesh became a full-fledged state.
