1. Major Archaeological Sites and Excavations
Arikkamedu (Near Pondicherry) was a prominent Sangam Age port that maintained
maritime trade relations with the Roman Empire. Excavations conducted by
Mortimer Wheeler using the scientific soil layer method revealed a
planned town, warehouse, ring wells, and a Roman factory. Important discoveries include
Sangam Chola coins, Roman pottery, and Roman gold coins of the Augustus period.
Keezhadi (Sivagangai District), discovered in February 2017, is located near
Madurai on the banks of the Vaigai River. Findings such as
stone alignment burials and potsherds with Tamil-Brahmi script indicate
early literacy and urbanization in Tamil Nadu dating back to the 6th century BCE.
Adichanallur (Thoothukudi District), situated on the
banks of the Thamiraparani River, is famous for its
114-acre urn burial site. The first excavation was carried out by
Andrew Jagor, and the artifacts are preserved in the
Berlin Museum.
Paiyampalli is an important Neolithic culture site known for
polished stone celts and ancient rock paintings.
Kodumanal (Erode) and Guttur have revealed
iron smelting furnaces, confirming the presence of
iron tool
