1. Early Political Organizations and Chronology
Madras Native Association (1852) was founded by G. Lakshminarasu Chetty. It was the earliest political organization in South India and the first such body in the Madras Presidency. The organization played a major role in campaigning against injustice and successfully contributed to the abolition of the Torture Act.
Madras Mahajana Sabha was established on May 16, 1884 by P. Anandacharlu and P. Rangaiah Naidu. P. Rangaiah Naidu served as the first President of the Sabha. The organization is also associated with Veeraraghavachari and became well known for conducting political education programs.
Other important organizations include the Madras Dravidian Association, which was founded by C. Natesanar. The Madras branch of the Muslim League was established by Yakub Hasan.
