India Has Sufficient Crude Oil Reserves – Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri

Introduction

Energy Security is a very important factor for the economic growth of any country. Since India is one of the largest energy-consuming countries in the world, it is essential that the supply of crude oil remains uninterrupted. Recently, Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri stated that India has sufficient reserves of crude oil and fuel.

1. India’s Dependence on Crude Oil Imports (Import Dependence)

India imports around 85–88% of its crude oil requirements. The major sources of imports are Middle Eastern countries — such as Saudi Arabia, Iraq, United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Kuwait. In addition, Russia and the United States have also become important suppliers. More than 50% of India’s crude oil imports come from Middle Eastern countries.

2. Importance of the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz is located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. It is one of the most important maritime routes for global energy trade. Approximately 20% of the world’s crude oil transportation passes through this strait. Due to political tensions in the Middle East (involving Iran – Israel – United States conflicts), there have been temporary disruptions in this shipping route at times.

3. India’s Crude Oil Reserves

According to the central government, India has sufficient crude oil and fuel reserves to meet demand for about 6 to 8 weeks. These reserves include crude oil, petrol, diesel, and aviation turbine fuel (ATF). The government has stated that these reserves are adequate to meet the country’s energy requirements.

4. Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR)

To strengthen India’s energy security, the government has established Strategic Petroleum Reserves (SPR). The major oil storage facilities are located at Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), Mangaluru (Karnataka), and Padur (Karnataka). These reserves help meet the nation’s energy needs during emergencies. The program is managed by Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Limited (ISPRL).

5. Government Monitoring Measures

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has established a 24-hour Control Room. Through this system, the government continuously monitors petrol and diesel supply, crude oil reserve levels, and international oil market conditions.

Conclusion / Way Forward

To ensure energy security, India follows a Diversification Strategy by importing crude oil from multiple countries. At the same time, strengthening Strategic Petroleum Reserves and promoting Renewable Energy and Green Hydrogen as alternative energy sources will further enhance India’s long-term energy security.
