Defence Ministry Signs Agreement with HAL for Procurement of 6 Modern Light Helicopters

Introduction

Strengthening India’s national security requires continuous improvement in defence equipment and technology. Particularly, new systems are needed to enhance coastal security, rescue operations, and naval activities. In this context, the Ministry of Defence has signed an agreement with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to procure 6 Advanced Light Helicopters (ALH Mk-III) worth ₹2,901 crore.

1. Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH Mk-III)

These helicopters are modern light helicopters with twin engines. They are an upgraded version of the “Dhruv” helicopter developed by HAL. These helicopters will be deployed with the Indian Coast Guard. Their major roles include maritime surveillance, search and rescue operations (SAR), assisting ships in distress at sea, ensuring the safety of fishermen, and protecting the marine environment. This will significantly enhance India’s coastal security capability.

2. HAL (Hindustan Aeronautics Limited)

HAL is a Central Public Sector Undertaking (PSU). It was established in 1940 and its headquarters is located in Bengaluru. It is one of India’s leading aerospace and defence manufacturing companies. Major platforms produced by HAL include Tejas Light Combat Aircraft, Dhruv Helicopter, Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), and Light Utility Helicopter (LUH). The company plays a major role in supporting the “Make in India” and “Atmanirbhar Bharat” initiatives.

3. Procurement of Naval Missiles

In addition, for the Indian Navy’s warships, the government has signed an agreement worth ₹2,182 crore to procure Surface-to-Air Missiles and missile launcher systems from Russia’s Rosoboronexport. The objective is to strengthen naval defence against enemy aircraft, drones, and missile threats, thereby improving the defensive capability of naval warships.

4. Importance of India’s Maritime Security

India’s maritime security is extremely important because India’s coastline stretches about 7,500 kilometers. Many major international trade routes pass through the Indian Ocean. Additionally, protecting marine resources and fishermen is essential. Therefore, strengthening the capabilities of the Indian Coast Guard and the Indian Navy is vital for national security.
