Role of Central Government Schemes in the Socio-Economic Development of Women in Tamil Nadu
Introduction
The social and economic development of women is considered an important indicator of a nation’s overall progress. To improve women’s health, education, economic independence, and social dignity, the Central Government has implemented various welfare schemes. Particularly in Tamil Nadu, these schemes play a significant role in improving the quality of life of women and enhancing their self-reliance and empowerment (Women Empowerment).
1. Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY)
To protect the health of pregnant women and promote safe motherhood, the Central Government introduced the PMMVY scheme in 2017. Under this scheme, financial assistance of up to ₹5000 is provided for the first child. The main objective is to promote nutrition improvement, healthcare support, and maternal and child welfare. In Tamil Nadu, more than 19 lakh women have benefited from this scheme, and over ₹1000 crore has been distributed as financial assistance. This scheme plays an important role in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates.
2. Basic Infrastructure Schemes Improving Women’s Health and Quality of Life
The quality of life of women is closely linked to basic facilities such as safe drinking water and clean cooking fuel. Under the Jal Jeevan Mission (2019), tap water connections are provided to every household. In Tamil Nadu, more than 1.1 crore drinking water connections have been provided. Similarly, under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (2016), free LPG connections are provided to women from poor households. In Tamil Nadu, more than 41 lakh LPG connections have been distributed. These schemes help reduce smoke-related diseases and save women’s time spent on household work.
3. Housing and Sanitation Schemes
Housing and sanitation facilities are considered basic human rights. Through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (2015), houses are provided with the aim of achieving housing for all. In Tamil Nadu, more than 14 lakh houses have been constructed under this scheme. Furthermore, the Swachh Bharat Mission (2014) aims to eliminate open defecation, and 65 lakh toilets have been constructed in Tamil Nadu. These initiatives ensure women’s safety, better sanitation, and a life of dignity.
4. Women Entrepreneurship and MSME Development
The emergence of women as entrepreneurs is an important factor in the country’s economic growth. In Tamil Nadu, more than 23 lakh MSME enterprises are led by women. The MSME sector contributes about 30% to India’s GDP. Women entrepreneurship plays a key role in creating employment opportunities and enhancing women’s economic independence.
5. Lakhpati Didi Scheme
To strengthen women’s self-help groups, the Central Government announced the Lakhpati Didi scheme. The primary objective of this scheme is to enable women to earn an annual income of ₹1 lakh. In Tamil Nadu, around 5.6 lakh women have benefited from this initiative. This scheme promotes rural entrepreneurship and economic independence among women.
6. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
The Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana was launched in 2015 to ensure financial security for the education and future of girl children. Under this scheme, a savings account is opened in the name of the girl child, which offers a high interest rate. In Tamil Nadu, more than 40 lakh accounts have been opened, with savings exceeding ₹33,000 crore. This scheme helps promote girl child welfare and education.
7. Self Help Groups (SHGs)
Self Help Groups (SHGs) are an important tool for the economic development of rural women. In Tamil Nadu, more than 3.3 lakh SHGs are functioning. Through these groups, women gain access to savings habits, credit facilities, and small-scale employment opportunities. These initiatives are supported under the DAY-NRLM (Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana) programme.
8. Women-led Startups
In recent years, the startup ecosystem has become an important component of India’s economic growth. In Tamil Nadu, more than 7000 women-led startups are currently operating. Schemes such as Startup India (2016) and Stand-Up India support these initiatives. They encourage innovation, create employment opportunities, and promote technological advancement.
Conclusion
Various schemes of the Central Government play a crucial role in improving women’s health, education, economic independence, and social dignity in Tamil Nadu. These initiatives contribute significantly to achieving women empowerment and inclusive social development. In the future, these schemes should be further strengthened by integrating them with nutrition, education, and skill development programmes.
